Pierre Auger Observatory

A project that aims to discover the sources and acceleration mechanism for ultra high energies cosmic rays.

The Pierre Auger Observatory, an international collaboration now including more than 490 scientists, aims to discover the sources and likely acceleration mechanism for ultra high energies cosmic rays; these particles must be produced in extreme environments in the Universe, but so far no theory has been able to convincingly explain where and how acceleration takes place.

The objective of the Pierre Auger Observatory is to measure the arrival direction, energy, and mass composition of cosmic ray air showers at very high energies.

IASF-Palermo is part of the collaboration mainly in the framework of background measurements, data analysis, and atmospheric monitoring.
