    The Pierre Auger Observatory, an International Facility to Study the Highest Energy Cosmic Rays

    The Pierre Auger Observatory aims to discover the sources and likely acceleration mechanism for UHECRs; these particles must be produced in extreme environments in the Universe, but so far no theory has been able to convincingly explain where, or how, acceleration takes place.

    The objective of the Pierre Auger Observatory is to measure the arrival direction, energy, and mass composition of cosmic ray air showers above 1019 eV.

    The Pierre Auger Observatory Project is an International Collaboration, born in 1996, now including more than 490 scientists from Argentina, Australia, Bolivia, Brazil, Croatia, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Vietnam.

    The Auger Team at IASF-Palermo

    The IASF-Palermo Auger team was defined at the beginning of 2006 to take part to this adventure, mainly in the framework of background measurements, data analysis, and atmospheric monitoring. With different tasks, the following IASF-Palermo personnel is nowadays part of the Auger Collaboration:

    * Maria Concetta Maccarone
    * Anna Anzalone
    * Osvaldo Catalano
    * Giovanni La Rosa
    * Alberto Segreto

    Our local team is completed by the IASF-Palermo technicians:

    * Benedetto Biondo
    * Giacomo Fazio
    * Francesco Russo
